Traveling alone is fantastic, mainly because you don’t have anyone else dragging you back, trying to make you do things their way.
You’re your own man, which means you’re free to go where you want, when you want, and spend on what you want.
However, it’s essential to make sure your budget is realistic, as well. Without proper control over your funds, you’re going to find yourself broke, with an overdrawn account. Have no fear! My experience with solo travel comes handy when it comes to traveling economically — but in style.
Seasonal Rates
The first thing to remember is that seasonal rates can make a huge difference. Air tickets, room rates, local travel charges, and even food can be much cheaper when you travel off-season.
Rates are usually higher during holiday season and summer vacations because that’s when families can travel.
As a lone tourist, you don’t have that problem, so plan for the off-season (barring horrible weather) and have fun!
Currency Conversion
Another thing to keep in mind is the conversion rate. If you’re traveling to someplace like Thailand, one dollar equals 31.5 Baht. When making your list of things to do, make sure that you account for the local price and not an estimate based on your currency.
This little trick will also help you plan realistically so that you don’t under or overestimate the price for specific things.
Cut Back on Luxury Accommodation
Look, as men, we don’t need fluffy towels or soft luxury sheets! A clean room and bathroom with the bare amenities work fine for someone like me. Don’t bother with booking 5-star hotels and fancy suites.
Get a beautiful condo on Airbnb instead. It’ll be more cost-effective, and if you book an entire place for yourself, you’ll have plenty of privacy too.
Budget for Food Wisely
When in Rome, you have to do as the Romans do. This applies to food too. Don’t eat out at fancy overpriced restaurants! Most of them are made for tourists, and they tend to cheat you with their prices.
Enjoy local street food or cafes instead. This will lower your food expenditure and get you the real, local taste.
Don’t Fall for Tourist Traps
I can’t emphasize this one enough. Most tourist spots are full of scams where they’ll promise you something and get you something else entirely. During my Bangkok trip, a Tuk Tuk driver promised me he’d show me the sights, but what he’s doing is taking you to random places and charging a commission from the owners.
Instead, strike off on your own. Look up some authentic travel blogs and let Google Maps guide you.
